  • Lead Sponsor of a bill ensuring a 48 hour hospital for mothers and newborns after birth, the first law of its kind in the country.
  • Lead Sponsor of a bill to require the development of child resistant handgun technology, which ultimately led to the Gun Safety Act of 2000
  • Sponsor of Megan’s Law, which increased penalties for child sex offenders and created a sex offender registry
  • 2006 Recipient of the Outstanding Legislator Award by the Healthy Air Coalition
  • One of only twelve elected officials in Maryland named a 2006 Legislative Partner by the Clean Energy Partnership
  • Inducted into The Daily Record’s Circle of Excellence for having been named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women three times
  • Appointed Vice- Chairperson of the House Judiciary Committee (1994-2002)…the first women to serve in a leadership role in a judicial committee.
  • Past Recipient of the Child Advocacy Award from the Academy of Pediatrics, Maryland Chapter
  • Past Recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the Harford Senior Center
  • Named Legislative Leader by the Maryland Commission for Women in 1995
