- Lead Sponsor of a
bill ensuring a 48 hour hospital for mothers and newborns
after birth, the first law of its kind in the country.
- Lead Sponsor of a
bill to require the development of child resistant handgun
technology, which ultimately led to the Gun Safety Act of
2000
- Sponsor of Megan’s
Law, which increased penalties for child sex offenders and
created a sex offender registry
- 2006 Recipient of
the Outstanding Legislator Award by the Healthy Air
Coalition
- One of only twelve
elected officials in Maryland named a 2006 Legislative
Partner by the Clean Energy Partnership
- Inducted into The
Daily Record’s Circle of Excellence for having been named
one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women three times
- Appointed Vice-
Chairperson of the House Judiciary Committee (1994-2002)…the
first women to serve in a leadership role in a judicial
